The Sea Ranch Posts
Whether you arrive from the North or South, HWY 1 brings you to this special place. Each winding turn of the road seems to mimic the rhythm of the pacific ocean – guiding you here, pulling you away and then bringing you closer.
The posts greet you first.
The Sea Ranch signposts are iconic: each post humble, direct, bold. Honed from nature, their edges both rough and clean, their message is clear:
You’ve made it.
WELCOME TO THE SEA RANCH
I craft handmade one of a kind wood posts painted with ‘The Sea Ranch’ or customized with the addition of your street name on one of the sides: reminders of your favorite place, wherever you may be. Additionally, I have created a graphic version which is available (wholesale or retail) as all-weather, vinyl stickers or as T-Shirts.

Behind the Posts…
I’ve been an illustrator, an icon designer and a fine art painter. Maybe it’s this unique background that has made me recognize the ‘short-hand’ for The Sea Ranch IS the signpost.
Following the coastline in Northern California, driving up HWY 1, there are landmarks that let me know I am getting close to The Sea Ranch. There’s Fort Ross and then the big totem outside of Timber Cove. There are the switch-backs at Stillwater and Salt Point. Twofish and the rows of pink belladonna naked ladies lining the post office are also hints that I’m really almost there. But who greets me first and says Welcome to The Sea Ranch? it’s the HWY 1 signpost near Stewarts Point. I made it again.
WELCOME TO THE SEA RANCH.
I’d been admiring the posts for awhile. I’m a walker and I had been trying to find some logic behind the posts as to which way the cut diagonal was facing*. West towards the coast? Facing HWY 1? or maybe just to the larger street and not the side streets? Regardless, I came to admire them. Bold. Direct. Simple. A little worn. Each unique.
It began as special homemade gift for my fiancé. He loves his home at The Sea Ranch and after spending most of the pandemic there full-time he was missing it. So it came to me that I’d make a small version for him to set on his desk in the office or maybe keep at home in San Francisco. I thought it was a terrific idea but honestly wasn’t sure what he’d think. The good news is, he LOVED it.
Since then I’ve made others for friends and family at TSR and the feedback has been the same. These handmade signposts evoke all that is The Sea Ranch, a relaxing touchstone in a way, each a reminder of shared experiences and memories of time spent at The Sea Ranch.
*It’s been a lot of fun researching the signposts and their history.
The mystery has been solved! The high point of the posts align with the topography, so the highpoint points up hill. LOVE THIS! Form and function. Following the natural rhythm of the land. Perfectly Sea Ranch.
